Armchair, by Georges Jacob, about 1785, France (Paris), gilded walnut with modern upholstery. Museum no. 1063-1882, © Victoria and Albert Museum, London http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/galleries/level-0/rooms-3-and-2-city-and-commerce,-17201780/ |
John Jones was a businessman who in 1882 left his large collection of fine and decorative arts to the Museum ‘for the benefit of the nation’. This generous gift now forms the foundation of the 18th-century French decorative arts collections in the Europe 1600-1815 galleries. Other objects from his collection can be found throughout the V&A.

The Camellia CollectionThe Camellias of Chiswick House are a national treasure and believed to be the oldest collection under glass in the Western world. Come and visit the fully restored Conservatory to see rare and historically important examples of these beautiful plants, with a gorgeous array of blooms; pink, red, white and striped. Today’s collection consists of 33 different varieties, many of which are descended from the original planting in 1828. Among them is the unique Middlemist’s red, originally brought from China in 1804 by Londoner John Middlemist, a nurseryman from Shepherds Bush. It is one of only two in the world known to exist – the other being in Waitangi in New Zealand.'It really deserves a visit. Very beautiful conservatory and gardens. I loved the visit today.' - Time Out London Reader (HP:http://www.chgt.org.uk/?PageID=596 ) |
Eating & DrinkingCome and enjoy delicious snacks, drinks, lunch or afternoon tea in the bright and airy Café. |
